Mephibosheth

Prayer for the return of the king

Oh my king, return to Zion, your throne.

Since my youth you have been my home.

You took me in and gave me land to own.

Love for my father to his son shown.

I was an outsider in exile alone.

Now at your table I have grown.

Though I was like a dog content with a bone.

Your kindness to my family is what I’ve known.

I refuse to groom the hair of my face

Until my king returns to his rightful place

I’d have followed you could I keep the pace

But instead I stayed to mourn your space

May your enemies meet disgrace

May you feel God’s loyal embrace

Those who seek your rule replaced

May he block their unrighteousness chase.

My father taught me you are God’s choice

Never resentment in his voice.

A covenant for an everlasting king.

The secret revealed your line will bring.

So listen not to the jealous man’s cries.

Give him my land, my water and skies.

On my own son’s life I tell no lies.

These tears for you are what fill my eyes.

Your safety is my only care.

To take the kingship I would never dare.

My own disability is enough to bear.

Loyalty to you is what I swear.

For your presence I daily yearn

And pray for my king a safe return.
